Most pricing teams track competitor prices. Far fewer track competitor availability. When a rival goes out of stock on a high-demand SKU, they create a temporary monopoly window—your chance to capture margin without losing volume. The key is detecting these gaps in real time and acting before the competitor replenishes.
Price changes signal intent. Stockouts signal constraint. A competitor dropping price by 5% may be a test, a promotion, or a clearance. A competitor showing zero inventory on a top-50 SKU for 48 hours? That's a structural opening. Their customers are actively searching alternatives. If your price is competitive and your stock is deep, you convert their frustrated buyers at your current margin—or slightly higher.
Not every stockout warrants action. Create three alert tiers: Tier 1 (top 20 SKUs, competitor OOS >24hrs, you have >21 days supply) triggers auto-reprice. Tier 2 (top 100 SKUs, competitor OOS >48hrs, you have >14 days supply) sends Slack alert for analyst review. Tier 3 (all other SKUs) logs to dashboard for weekly pattern analysis. This prevents alert fatigue while capturing high-impact opportunities.
One stockout capture might yield $2K incremental margin. But systematically exploiting 3-5 competitor gaps per month across your catalog builds a repeatable margin stream. Track "stockout capture rate" (gaps acted on / total detected gaps) and "margin per capture" as core KPIs. Teams using this approach typically see 1.5-2.5% gross margin improvement on monitored categories within two quarters—without a single broad price increase.
